QotD: Childhood Frights (or, More Scary Bedtime Stories)
What were you afraid of as a child that seems silly to you now?

"How good it feels to be sitting
by this fire," said Owl.
"It is cold and snowy outside."
Owl was eating buttered toast and
hot pea soup for supper.
Owl heard a loud sound at the front door.
"Who is out there, banging and pounding
at my front door on a night like this?" he said.
Owl opened the door. No one was there.
Only the snow and the wind.
Who would have thought that one of the scariest stories ever would have such a cozy and innocuous beginning? Owl at Home, written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel, is scarier even than Lotus' nightmarish bedtime story with its yawning churchyards and hellish contagion. The thought of tear-water tea and strange bumps attacking at night is still enough to send shivers down my back.
The scariest part of the book is without doubt "The Guest". The beginning is quoted above. Owl hears knocking at his door. He goes to answer. No one is there. He goes back to his supper. The knocking persists. Again, no one is there. *shivers* This happens a few times before kindly Owl realizes that Winter is knocking, and being the generous soul that he is, he lets Winter inside for a cup of tea. Winter invades. Owl's cozy home becomes flooded with snow drifts. Owl is freezing. He has no where to go.
