I bought a bag of green apples back at the end of August when I first moved here. I ate most of them. The remaining two retreated to the back of my fruit drawer, behind newer and more appealing apples. They waited, silently and patiently, for me to discover them nearly three months later.
And they look practically unchanged.
The only difference is they have acquired a certain clammy quality that warns me that they are mealy. I can't stand mealy apples, but I like applesauce, so technically I could transform them into applesauce and thereby avoid any guilt that tossing them would incur.
Yet... somehow their longevity makes me uncomfortable. Back in China, we would keep winter apples in the cold entryway. They would shrivel up but remain edible. Yet these apples show no signs of aging. I know they're not organic (as in organically-grown), but are they organic (as in carbon-based)?
Perhaps I should return them to their drawer and wait until they rot, and avoid my quandary.
After a rainy, exam-filled week, I finally had a chance to take a walk. The weather was perfect this afternoon. I owe my patient neighborhood many Miao Brother posts, but until I get my act together, here are some of the pictures I took.
Here's a Miao Tidbit in lieu of a proper Miao Post: I was just talking to Papa Miao, and Lotus Batcat purred for me over the phone. We call him the "purr-o-matic" because he purrs loudly at the slightest touch.

This pale, spotless ladybug bit me!
Beautiful, but sad...
I passed by a tree full of bright red apples. Many of them had already fallen to the ground. I guess they're inedible to humans, otherwise the owners would have picked the apples themselves. I wanted to get closer to the wasp (?), but I was just a tad too nervous.
the purple ipod shuffle! purple!
Well, I've seen purpler purples than this. It's more like a slate blue (I'm usually off with color names, so please excuse me... Mama Miao and I had a long discussion about whether a set of her towels were slate blue, blueish purple, or simply purple. We also had a similar discussion regarding her sheets.)
Apple labeled it as purple, and that's good enough for me.
Not that I need another ipod shuffle. In fact, I absolutely do not need another one. I bought one back in April, as a consolation prize for abandoning a life of relative luxury. My shuffle is silver, and thanks to IG for pointing out this product, I have no less than 6 colorful covers. All I'm missing are the black, silver, and dark blue. And why would I need a silver cover for a silver ipod? But I might get the others for good measure, since they're so cheap.
Anyway, my point is that I have a faithful, flawless iPod barely four months old, and with seven different color options, including purple, yet I still covet the new purple one.
But I don't think I'll get it anytime in the foreseeable future. It is well below the bunny slippers, the squirrel bag, cupcake earrings, and my monthly rent on my priority list.
Kemi's thoughts: If I bat it around and crush it under my big bear paw then she'll have to get a new one and bring me some catnip.
