One reason I like the artwork of Pollyanna Pickering so much is that the artist is deeply involved in wildlife conservation and animal rehabilitation. For many years, she ran a hospital for birds of prey and other British wildlife. She personally cared for many of the animals. Her paintings beautifully convey her passion and sensitivity for wildlife. I have her 2007 British Wildlife calendar cut up and pasted around my desk.
Okay, maybe the Miao Brothers are a little over-eager for winter to come. To them, winter means toasty cuddles by the (faux) fireplace, enchanting scenes of diamond flurries from the windows, the semi-annual return the humble chronicler to give them extra cuddles, and new holidays toys and treats.
The illustrious master snowflake artist crankypants (creator of the famous Elvis Snowflake) has crafted three perfect snowflakes in honor of the Miao Brothers. More purrfect snowflakes have never before been seen. The Miao Brothers would like to join together in a purry chorus to thank the generous Creator of Snowflakes. We all know that creating snowflakes is no easy task. You can give it a try here or here.
For your entertainment, here are a few attempts at snowflaking by Baby Lotus, who's still at the kindergarten level of scissor usage.
A special Halloween message brought to you by Kemi the Scare Bear*:
HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM THE MIAOS!!
* Kemi is known as the "Scare Bear" because he's so easily spooked! He's also known as Kemi Bear-a-boo.
I sometimes think of myself as a bird of prey. You know, a merlin is a kind of falcon. I'm really more like a snowy owl, though. See? I have big golden saucer eyes, and I have feathery white fur.

This snowy owl here really resembles me. You'll have to forgive the ruffled state of my feathers. I've just gotten back from a hunting expedition!

In addition to being a mighty hunter like big brother King Ping, I'm also an artist with very ecclectic but refined tastes. Here are a couple of my favorite paintings of owls by Pollyanna Pickering, a British wildlife artist and advocate. I hope that little miao will tell you more about her some day. She's a great artist!
* CHRONICLER'S NOTE: Merlin's prey is a furball, one of several fur-things that the Miao Brothers have received as gifts over the years. However, little miao does not encourage the purchase of fur in any form for any purpose. For more information, visit the Humane Society's Fur Free Campaign. (No, Tantra, don't worry, it doesn't mean you have to give up your beautiful fur coat - just don't buy another one).

A mouse met its end late last night in the Miao House. Foul play is suspected, though no physical evidence can be found to link any of the Miao Brothers with this deed.
One previous mouse-sighting was recorded in the Miao House over the past two years. Lucikly, on this occasion Papa Miao was able to rescue the hapless mouse from the mighty claws of Ping and the polydactyl paws of Lotus and release it into the wild.
Sadly, on this occasion no timely intervention was possible. At approximately 6.05am this morning, Mama Miao found the mouse displayed in the center of the kitchen mat. Suspecting in the dim lights that said mouse was in fact a toy, Mama Miao quickly discovered that that was not the case.
Ping, who is rumored to have Siberian tiger ancestry, was known as a Mighty Hunter during his China days, and is therefore the prime suspect in this case. His brothers have no known mousing experience.
Appreciating his efforts to protect the Miao House, Mama and Papa Miao have regaled Ping with praise for his hunting prowess.
However, little miao (born in the Year of the Rat and with a soft spot for all related creatures) would like to take a moment to celebrate the life of this little nameless mouse. One of her favorite websites is www.House-Mouse.com. The artist, Ellen Jareckie, creates whimsical and heart-warming pictures of playful little mice and their critter companions. What's more, Ms. Jareckie is also a licensed animal rehabilitator and has rescued many hapless critters like the Miaoed Mouse throughout her life.
Here are some of little miao's favorite House Mouse drawings. Rest in peace, little mousie.
