In memory of the little squirrel who got run over when I was out jogging this afternoon.
the wind wilts flowers
and dulls the green of summer
but leaves gold behind
The squirrel tried to make it back to the side of the road, but it didn't stand a chance. The driver sped by at about 10 miles over the speed limit. It was the most sickening and saddening sight I have seen in a while. From the way it struggled, I have no doubt that the squirrel suffered terribly in its last moments. At least I'm comforted by the knowledge that if I get run over, the driver will be held accountable and I'll haunt their conscience (if they have one) until the end of their days.
But no one cares about a squirrel.
It just isn't fair.
Dinner at little miao's is much less exciting than dinner at the Miao House. But it comes with food-kus.
What I made tonight is a elaborate in comparison to the usual - three courses and more than two steps in preparation.
I began with fresh organic figs.

surprise reunion
with a childhood treat on sale
but now it's all gone*
* To me, "sale" has two syllables, but I took poetic license. For that matter, "childhood" has three syllables when I say it... argh, sometimes I feel like I haven't a clue about this language. I blame phonics.

Followed by spring greens salad that is technically past its expiration date - it's not yet slimy, so I consider it edible. I'm actually very particular about my salad's freshness, as Papa Miao can testify. This salad was surprisingly healthy despite its expiration five days ago.

And followed by rice and no-longer-frozen veggies seasoned with one of my favorite Indian spice mixes. I'm kind of ambivalent about this "dish" because I have it so much.

Remember the spot on Ping's foot I noticed a while ago? Lurkertype mentioned that marmie cats tend to get spots like this as they get older - and indeed, I noticed another one.
Here's a food-ku in Ping's honor: (why are all my Miao-kus food-kus these days?)
bubble-gum flavored
jellybeans by the handful
please leave some for me
A lone supplicant
Arms laden with gifts of gold

The Miao Brothers singly and jointly disapprove of my smoothie. I don't understand why - I guess there's just no accounting for taste, or lack thereof.
Is it
bananas, berries
mixed with pomegranate juice
nectar in a glass
or is it
a glass of pink sludge
chilly, acrid, hurts my nose
get it away now
At first Merlin treated the smoothie with suspicion-laced curiosity, but after it followed him halfway across the kitchen floor, he became offended.
Kemi considers eating the smoothie as a last measure to stave off starvation, since his crunchie dishes are woefully empty.

Left behind in the bowl
Forsook by spring greens**
* Papa Miao tells me that "soil" has but one syllable, whereas I maintain that it has two.
** Papa Miao is making the same argument for the monosyllabic nature of "bowl". I'm holding my ground.

Dreaming of Egypt Incidentally, this sofa is part of the late and lamented Blue Couch set we had at the Miao House for a couple years.
