A must for kitties of all shapes and sizes!
Spurred by the ongoing pet food recalls, we've decided to transition the Miao Brothers to a diet of homemade food. The decision was Mama Miao's, though I'd like to think that my constant lobbying against meat by-products (among other things) played a part in convincing her to switch.
In Mama Miao's Words
The Miao Brothers are soon to experience culinary adventures and I need help! The recent cat food scare has made me do the right thing - finally - and make my own cat food. Especially now that the danger seems to be spreading to dry foods as well. What commercial food is safe anymore? And now that they are testing it, they keep finding more and more atrocities in the contents. I am exploring every option I can find for recipes. So far, the most nutritious sounding is a raw food recipe - whole carcasses bones and all ground up - with certain supplements and raw egg yokes added, and then given to them raw, but at "mouse body temperature." Sounds great to my medical-nutrition-mind, but I am afraid that it will lack the smells and tastes that the Brothers associate with food. Do any of you make your own cat food? What recipes do you use? I have a fantastic meat grinder and food packager for making little freezer packs, so I can do quantities. I have heard that cats generally like the smell and taste of garlic in their food. Experience with this? Suggestions? Momcat and the Boys will be very grateful for any advice.
So, I'm trying to direct Mama Miao to books and other resources so she can make the most informed choices about how to feed the Miao Bros. I found a few resources online, including an entire website devoted to homemade cat food created by a veterinarian, and recommendations for a book called Raising Cats Naturally. Dances with Cats also shared useful information and her own experiences in this post. Unsurprisingly, some of the sources I found conflict with each other (ground meat diet vs. unground meat, for example), and there are doubtlessly other issues that will emerge.
As a vegan who tries to eat as naturally as possible for ethical reasons, I fully support Mama Miao's decision to switch the Brothers to a raw meat diet (though I might not volunteer to help her with the meat grinder). Had I my own cats and the money to support them, I would probably feed them something like Feline's Pride, which appears to use a raw food recipe.
Any suggestions about homemade cat food are welcome.
